There is yet another benefit to having a healthy sex life, and that is it helps keep you lean and trim by burning calories every time you enjoy some playful antics between the sheets.
While many of us have joked about achieving our recommended daily active minutes during a romping session, there could be some truth behind this. According to a study that was published in the journal PLOS ONE, women burn around 69 calories during a 25-minute love-making session, while men tend to shed around 100 during the same experience.
The Times Of India reported the findings, which showed men burn 4.2 calories per minute during sex while it is slightly less for women at 3.2 calories per minute.
Of course, this all depends on how steamy your shenanigans are, as the more vigorous and energetic your love-making is the more calories you are likely to burn. What would be the equivalent to a 30-minute walk could actually equate to an energetic gym workout if you and your partner are enthusiastic in the bedroom.
These statistics could encourage more people to get affectionate with their loved one, as obesity rates in the UK are currently through the roof.
In fact, nearly a third (29 per cent) of all adults in Britain are classified as obese, and as obesity can lead to a number of serious health complications, it is not surprising there were as many as 711,000 hospital admissions in 2018/19 where obesity was a factor.
It now looks as though sex could be the answer to cutting obesity rates by getting more people fit and active – even if they don’t leave their house!
