Confessions From the Handbag: A Forensic Study of What British Women Actually Carry

A handbag is not an accessory. It's a diary with a zip.
We asked — nay, begged — the Saucy community to empty their bags and confess the contents, and what came back was beautiful, chaotic and occasionally alarming. One reader submitted a photograph of her bag's interior that included a full-sized umbrella, three lip balms and a single baby shoe. She has no children. We didn't pry. We respect the mystery.
What follows is our entirely unscientific, deeply judgmental field guide to what your bag says about you. Read yours against the list and prepare to feel seen.
The Bag Itself: Your Opening Statement
Before we get to the contents, the vessel matters. A slouchy hobo says 'I contain multitudes and also four years of receipts.' A tiny micro-bag that couldn't fit a bank card says 'I have nothing to prove and nowhere to be, allegedly.' A structured tote with a laptop says 'I'm busy and I want you to know it' — which is fair, but we see through it.
The Emergency Flats: The Realist
Fold-up ballet pumps tucked into the side pocket. You've been burned before — the 11pm walk from the Northern line, the cobbled high street, the heel that snapped at your mate's wedding. You are the friend with paracetamol, plasters and a phone charger. People call you 'the sensible one' and you secretly love it.
Saucy verdict: Marry this person. Or be this person.
The Lucky Lippy: The Romantic
One lipstick — one — that has been repurchased so many times it's practically a personality trait. It's not the best formula. It's not even the best shade anymore. But it was what you wore the night you met someone/a got the job/won the office sweepstake, and now it's non-negotiable. You believe in rituals, and honestly, we're jealous.
Saucy verdict: Superstition is cheaper than therapy. Carry on.
The Five Lip Products: The Indecisive Romantic
You are not the Romantic. You are her chaotic cousin. You have a balm, a gloss, a tint, a 'proper' lipstick and a sample from a magazine from 2019. You reapply based on vibes, not schedules, and you've never once finished a lip product in your life. There is no shame here. There is only gloss.
Saucy verdict: Your bag weighs more than my emotional baggage, but you look great.
The Receipts From Three Different Postcodes: The Ostrich
You will deal with them 'this weekend.' You have been saying this since March. Interspersed among the receipts are a loyalty card for a coffee shop that closed, a train ticket you forgot to use and a to-do list written on the back of a shopping list. You are not disorganised — you are simply operating on a different, more forgiving system of time.
Saucy verdict: The bag knows what you've done. The bag forgives you anyway.
The Book You're 'Reading': The Aspirational One
A paperback, spine barely cracked, that has been in there since your holiday in 2022. You bring it everywhere in case of a spare moment, and you have never once encountered a spare moment. The bookmark is a receipt (see above). You're not fooling anyone, but the intention is gorgeous.
Saucy verdict: Buy the book. Carry the book. That's 90% of reading.
The Mystery Keys: The Enigma
You have keys to something. You don't know what. You've had them for four years and you're too far in to ask now. You are a woman of secrets, possibly including from yourself.
Saucy verdict: Iconic. Slightly concerning. Iconic.
The Safety Kit: The Mother of the Group
Safety pins, tissues, a sewing kit from a hotel you stayed in once, a hair bobble around the wrist you don't wear anymore, paracetamol, a snack with an expired date you'll eat anyway. You are the reason group nights out function. You are the infrastructure of friendship.
Saucy verdict: Please accept this article as a formal thank-you note.
What It All Means
Here's our theory: your bag contents aren't about organisation at all. They're about hope. The flats are hope for a comfortable ending. The lucky lippy is hope that the magic repeats. The unread book is hope for a slower life. The mystery keys are hope that, one day, something interesting will need unlocking.
So no, we won't be telling anyone to declutter. Empty your bag, look at your little museum of optimism, and add one more saucy thing — a red lip, a gold compact, a perfume sample — purely because it makes you smile.
Your bag's a diary. Make it a good read.
